Air-dried pieces of the stem of M. charantia were extracted with methanol. The MeOH extract was suspended in H2O and partitioned sequentially using EtOAc and n-BuOH. The EtOAc layer was purified by silica gel, HPLC and recrystallized to yield twenty-seven compounds including thirteen triterpenoids, five aromatics, three alkaloids, two steroids, one tocopherol, two lignans and one unknown compound, Among those, (23E)-25-methoxycucurbit-23-ene-3β,7β-diol (T1), (23E)-cucurbita-5,23,25-triene-3β,7β-diol (T2), (23E)-25- hydroxycucurbita-5,23-diene-3,7-dione (T3), (23E)-cucurbita-5,23,25- triene-3,7-dione (T4), (23E)-5β,19-epoxycucurbita-6,23-diene-3β,25-diol (T5), (23E)-25-cucurbita-5,24-diene-3,7,23-one (T6), (23E)-7β,25- methoxycucurbita-5,23-dien-3β-ol (T7)、(23E)-25-hydroxycucurbita -5(10),6,23-triene-3β,25-diol (T8), (23E)-7-methoxycucurbita-5,23- diene-3β,25-diol (T9) are new compounds. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Morinda citrifolia (Rubiaceae) is commonly known as noni. Air-dried pieces of the heartwood of M. citrifolia were extracted with methanol. The MeOH extract was suspended in H2O and partitioned sequentially using EtOAc and n-BuOH. The EtOAc layer was purified by silica gel, HPLC and recrystallization to yield nineteen compounds including eight anthraquinones, five steroids, three triterpenoids, one coumarin and two tocopherols. Among those compounds, α-tocopherol showed strong DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Additionally, (23E)-7β-methoxycucurbita- 5,23-diene-3β,25-diol (T9), 5,6-dihydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (A1), 4-hydroxy-2-formylanthraquinone (A5), ursolic acid (T16), showed strong cytotoxic activities against SK-Hep 1 cell line with IC50 values of 26.0、47.0, 129.0, 15.0 μM, respectively.
