This is an essential issue for it could be used as consultation for the selection and edition of articles in future Chinese textbooks in Taiwan. Content analysis is adopted in this study as research method. First, the related literature on this topic were collected and comprehensively investigated. Hereafter, according to the previous investigation and the suggestions of professionals and scholars, four main themes - human sympathy, ethic, nature and living were categorized. On the basis of these four categories, all the modern essays from the three versions of 9-Year-Continuous-Curriculum Chinese textbooks by Nanyi, Kanshen and Hanlin publisher were studied and classified. The result of classification helps the understanding and content analysis of modern essays in the three sets of textbooks. Finally, based on the results of content analysis in this research, suggestions for the edition of textbooks, Chinese lesson pedagogy and perspective researches are made as follow: 1.All three set of Chinese textbook has a large proportion of modern essays. 2.Among all the modern essays, the theme of “ethic” serves the greatest proportion. 3.Among all the modern essays, the theme of “human sympathy” serves the smallest proportion. 4.As for the primary topic, the most popular sub-topics are “reason explanation”, “living merriment” and “environmental observation” in the descending order. 5.As for the secondary topic, the most popular sub-topics are “living merriment”, “character images”, and “local concerns” in the descending order. 6.All three sets of Chinese textbooks has vacancy lectures, Hanlin publisher serves as the first place. 7.Among the replicated essays in the three sets of Chinese textbooks, the theme of “ethic” serves the largest proportion. 8.Among the essays in the theme of “human sympathy”, the sub-theme of “family relationship” serves the greatest proportion. 9.Among the essays in the theme of “nature”, the sub-themes of “environmental observation” and “local concerns” serve the largest proportion. 10.Among the essays in theme of “ethic”, the sub-theme of “reason explanation” serves the largest proportion. 11.All the three sets of Chinese textbooks contain equal proportion of the essays in the theme of “living”.
