The research subjects are 1384 primary school students in the urban, rural areas and outer islands in Penghu. The research instrument is “A Questionnaire on the Understanding and Attitude Towards Environmental Problems in Primary School Students in Penghu”, data analysis is done using χ²-test, t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, with the following conclusions: 1. The main source of knowledge about the environment in primary school students is the school curriculum. This is followed by environmental education activities organized by the school, and conversations with others. There are few other sources; in most cases, the source is the internet. 2. The primary school students think the most serious environmental problem in their own community is garbage. This is followed by noise pollution, random burials, coastal pollution, use of poisons and explosives in fishing, and traffic congestion; but air pollution, the use of chemical in farming and water pollution are not considered serious problems. 3. The primary school students think that in Penghu the most serious environmental problem is garbage, followed by random burials, coastal pollution, use of poisons and explosives in fishing, noise pollution, traffic congestion and air pollution. But the use of chemical in farming and water pollution are not considered serious. 4. There is no significant difference between boys and girls in their knowledge and attitude towards environmental problems. 5. The sixth graders are significantly more knowledgeable than the fourth graders. 6. There is no significant difference among students from the urban areas, rural areas and the outer islands in both knowledge and attitude. 7. In terms of socio-economic backgrounds, students from high-income families have an edge over students from middle-income families; students from middle-income families are conspicuous superior to students from low-income families. 8. There is a positive correlation between knowledge and attitude towards environmental problems in primary school students. Keywords: environmental problem, environmental cognition, environmental attitude, environmental awareness, environmental education Hsin-hwa Wu 吳新華 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 112 zh-TW
