Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 語文教育學系碩士班 === 94 === Abstract Punctuation marks contain assistant functions tremendously in writing, but they have been abused or misused really often, even ignored without being used sufficiently since Hu Shi and his colleagues proposed “ Qing ban xing xingshi biaodian fuhao i an” ( 請頒行新式標點符號議案 ) in 1919, which was announced and brought into force by the government in 1920 for nearly 90 years. This thesis focuses on the history, development, and importance of punctuation marks to clarify their correct practice; the use on rhetoric and literature also has been researched to enrich the meanings of literary works. Furthermore, the content about punctuation marks in elementary school textbooks has been analyzed; practical pedagogy for punctuation marks teaching has been gathered and studied to provide references for language teachers for the purpose to enhance the capability of students and people to use punctuation marks. The structure of this paper is as follows: In Chapter 1, the abstract, which explains my motivations, purposes, research methodology and the limitation of research extent. Chapter 2 contains literature review, which focuses on the history, situation of research nowadays and the comparison of punctuation marks practice between the English language and the Chinese language. In Chapter 3, the aim is at the discussions over the kinds, functions of syntax and rhetoric, and the situation of misusing punctuation marks. Chapter 4 discusses the application of punctuation marks in classical poetry, modern poetry, children’s poetry, modern prose and modern novels. Chapter 5 focuses on the analysis and criticism of punctuation marks about the materials in the elementary school textbooks. Chapter 6 proposes the conclusion and suggestion of my research finding.
