Chapter five focuses on the actual text contents, analyzing their themes, geography and background angle. The final chapter is the conclusion plus specific recommendations.
The author based her research first on categorizing and analyzing travel texts within Mandarin textbooks, followed by discussion of the texts’ written style and contents. Her study discovered that the majority of these travel texts appear in third, forth and fifth grade textbooks. The story lines are generally written in narrative style and in chronological order. Most of these texts used “Protection of the environment” as the key theme and the difficulty of the texts varied according to the level of the student the textbook was written for. Also, geographically, most of the text took place domestically in northern part of Taiwan. In sum, the author feels that these travel texts lack literary depth and suggest that quality literary work should supplement the overall Mandarin curriculum.
Grade 1-9 Curriculum of Elementary and Junior High Schools stipulates that education should emphasize both national-identity as well as international perspectives. From this standpoint, the author feels the use of travel genre deserves serious attention. In the design of these texts, care should be taken to build-in continuity, depth and breadth. Educators should guide the students first to approach such genre as simple readings and in time, encourage students’ in creating their own writings. Under such guidance, students may strengthen their reading and self-expression written skills. The author recommends in-depth analysis of the contents of these travel texts and recommends further topical study of this genre as a teaching tool.
