碩士 === 國立臺北大學 === 民俗藝術研究所 === 94 === The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the incense industry in Tainan city. This thesis also includes an introduction of Chinese incense culture and the prospects of the incense industry. Incense is a very important tool in Chinese culture. The use of incense also implies the enhanced spirituality involved when Chinese people worship their ancestors by burning incense. The Chinese believe that incense is the connection between their ancestors and themselves since incense can transmit the respect and message that the worshipers feel for their ancestors. Furthermore, the use of incense allows the Chinese to feel more at peace when worshiping their ancestors. This thesis was written by collecting and reading documents that summarize the history and development of incense in Taiwan. In addition, I analyzed the incense industry in Tainan city through surveys and observed the manufacturing process of incense. Due to the changes in the structure of society and religious diversification, I categorized and compared the different types and changes between traditional incense and modern incense.
