碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 政治學研究所 === 94 === In modern times, the coexistence of various cultures within and between societies has been a significant phenomenon. Normatively, how should people deal with this diversity? I suggest that policies and laws should attend and affirm the differences which were to a large extent ignored even suppressed by the prevailing arrangements of politics, cultures, and economics, namely the ruling norms. The politics of difference demands that social groups unfairly disadvantaged or burdened, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, indigenous peoples, national minorities, immigrants, disability, under the ruling norms and the entailing arrangements be offered group rights. The injustice disadvantaged groups suffered can be sorted into three categories, the cultural, the economical, and the political, and the corresponding rights are redistribution, recognition, and inclusion. These normative considerations and appeals, however, can only be realized or specified after people finish the political process, i.e., to make concrete decisions through communicative, competitive, and even confrontative engagement by people from different social positions with differing perspectives, principles, and interests. As the normative proposals, this political dimension of group rights is also indispensable to the politics of difference.
