As a result, school emblems are the most important design elements in school identity system. Between 1997 and 2005, a number of universities renovated or modified the design of their school emblems because of upgrading or reformation so as to meet the policy made by the Ministry of Education. Can these school emblems appropriately convey their original creative concepts to viewers? Therefore, the purpose of the study was to explore the views held by subjects with and without design backgrounds toward school emblems. School emblems of those newly-established universities from 1997 to 2005 were compiled with a view to making an analysis of their design and original creative ideas. In addition, examination was applied to school emblems in the process of these universities’ upgrading and reformation. Moreover, cognitive analysis of the subjects with different backgrounds was employed in the hope of finding out the representative school emblems of these newly-established universities. In the study, method of semantic differential was used in order to investigate cognitive understanding of the subjects with different backgrounds toward school emblems of the newly-established universities. The results of the study were presented as follows: 1. Through one-way analysis of variance, it was discovered that each image adjective had notable differences in at least six school emblems. Moreover, differences in some degree of cognitive understanding were found between subjects with design backgrounds and those without design backgrounds in terms of school emblems. Accordingly, designers might not appropriately convey original concepts for viewers through the images of school emblems. 2. By means of semantic differential chart, students with design backgrounds showed stronger senses to the images of school emblems than those without design backgrounds. Higher mean values and lower standard deviations could be discovered for students with design backgrounds. Besides, the scores given by students with design background showed more consistent in terms of the images of school emblems. The reason was that basic design training was offered to students with design backgrounds, so they showed stronger senses, made proper judgments, and scored quite resolutely. However, students without design backgrounds showed less confidence in choosing answers. Consequently, differences were apparently displayed. 3. In comparison with the above two data, highly evaluated school emblems given by students with different background were found to represent school emblems of the newly-established universities. Among the school emblems, the image of school emblem of National Ilan University and that of National University of Kaohsiung were given higher scores. Dynamic senses were displayed in the design of both school emblems. Distinguishing features could be observed in the use of colors. Additionally, original creative ideas of designers could be properly presented to viewers. Therefore, the design and the modification of school emblems could be referred to in the future.
