Ever since the Preparatory Committee of PTS first introduced a TV news automation system – “BASYS” to Taiwan in 1993, every news department of local TV stations has been pursuing the goal to accomplish an advanced production.digitization process in TV news production. This study aimed to compare and research the three different digitization models of local TV news production. The TV stations included in this study are Formosa Television (FTV), ERA TV and Da-Ai Television (Da-Ai TV). Having adopted the AVID system in 2003, FTV is the one that implanted global experience directly and almost completely. In the same year, ERA TV introduced to Tawain Sam-Yang News Automation & Digitized Film-reel System, developed from the Mainland China Da-Yang System.. Confronted with the challenge of adapting this system, ERA TV tried to differentiate itself from others in becoming the most representative TV station which transformed a Mainland China’s system in meeting local needs. Da-Ai TV as a latecomer, without any previous TV news production burden (e.g. Beta-cam production), took American ENPS system as a framework and, after long process of research and development, came forward with a self-developed digitization system. Then, Da-Ai TV not only won the 2005 Golden Bell Research & Development Award but also created its own style and unique digitization mode. Case study was used as the research method for this study. In-depth interviews of news digitization production people at the three chosen TV stations were conducted for realizing the three systems’ characteristics and current statuses. The research objectives include: 1. To analyze the differences between the traditional TV news production process and the digitized TV news production process. 2. To define the proper models for Taiwan local TV news digitization production. 3. To investigate the functions of digitization systems for TV news production. The study found that the three systems all carry the news processing functions, including non-linear editing & broadcasting, news documentation and memorization, and indexing & storage. In the era of customization and localization, the three systems can meet most of the local TV stations’ digitization needs. The research findings also include each system’s current challenge. For FTV, the storage format of broadcasting data hasn’t been finalized so that TV newsroom staff cannot properly deal with news data index and download data on the platform. Therefore, digitization for FTV is not completed yet. For ERA TV, the Sam-Yang System has the function of media assets management; however, the digitized film-reel system hasn’t been fully constructed that further revision and adaptation is needed. Da-Ai TV has entered the stage of “tape-less” and “digitized” operation; however, more efforts need to be made to improve the convenience of resources sharing. In conclusion, the similarities and differences of the three cases in this research may shed some light for the digitization of Taiwan TV stations’news production.
