The high performance of WLAN can afford the application of processing video streaming that needs high bandwidth. The usage of WLAN peripheral is limited to transmit data. In our paper, we implement an IEEE 802.11 WLAN based embedded helicopter to emphasis the practicality and the entertainment instead of transmitting. The helicopter is equipped with web camera and g-sensor to get the real-time image and the information of itself. Mpeg4 is a popular video coding in recent year because it is object-oriented. The captured frame can be encoded to there different frame, included I frame, B frame and P frame. When we get the same coding information, we can decode them by any render to watch the real-time video. Mpeg4 increases the compress rate so that decreases the data rate. Different from general RF transmitter and receiver, we use a small board that generate PWM signal to control the servo in the helicopter. Remote users can control the helicopter with a joystick through USB in any laptop. Embedded system is designed for special purposes and is the kernel technique in our paper. The IEEE 802.11 WLAN based embedded helicopter brings us a whole new idea: We can also “play” like that in a WLAN. The electronics in Taiwan boomed in decade but most of them are so called OEM or ODE. Although the order amount is large, the original product is few. In this paper, we implement a helicopter as to show a new view in electronics.
