Sunburn is an acute reaction including cutaneous inflammatory and edema, and apart from inflammatory reaction, excessive skin exposure to ultraviolet radiation would also cause premature aging of the skin and development of skin cancers. The purpose of this research is to investigate and select 49 medicinal plants in Taiwan for the application of sun protection and after sun recovery under the method of Activity Test. According to the mechanism of chemical sunscreen, AWS was found to be the most active component to block UVA, as PSR to UVB in the first part of the activity test. In the experiment of the anti-inflammatory activity test, WLF was found be the most effective in anti-inflammatory mechanism by utilizing the method of suppressing Neutrophil to produce ROS, and its anti-inflammatory activity was found better than Kinetin under the concentration of both 20 ug/ml and 50 ug/ml, in which the suppressing rate was approximately 80%. The suppressing rate of AWS was above 50% on the concentration of both 20 ug/ml and 50 ug/ml. On the anti-photoaging activity test, DSL and EWF were found the best anti-aging agents by suppressing the release and activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9, hence deferring skin-aging activities. From the above results, it is hoped that a composite formula sunscreen consisting plants of AWS, PSR, WLF, DSL or EWF is developed as a new generation natural sunscreen that has both functions of sun protection and after sun recovery.
