It has sprouted and grown since the beginning of the 20th century and bloomed rapidly in Taiwan in the seventies. The power of media such as the newspaper supplement and the special writing frame differing from traditional prose have made reportage a unique literature. This made many literature writers joined in reportage and thus the out coming of many new exceptional reportage writers. Chen Ming Parn is one of the outstanding creators of the new generation of reportage at that time in Taiwan. His works and publications had substantial influences in the reportage field. He also had great passion in teaching reportage and helping younger writers. This thesis focuses on the reportage work of Chen and explores the influences of his work along the development of the reportage. These included the importance to the society at that time and the future value and contribution to this field. There are six chapters in this thesis. The summary of each chapter is listed below. Chapter one is the introduction. It described the purpose, objectives, scopes, restrictions and procedures of this thesis. Also included are documentations and structures of this study. Chapter two is the Development of the Reportage in Taiwan. This chapter focuses on three dimensions. First, the chapter explores the justice circle of the reportage and its time background of development. Second, it will distinguish and merge the similarities and differences between news report and reportage. Third, this chapter will analyze the crises and perspectives of the reportage, expecting this new developing literature can be extended and developed. Chapter three is Chen Ming Parn’s life and his writing background. This chapter begins to enter the theme spirit of the thesis. Firstly it will explore and describe Chen Ming Parn’s family background of his growth and the social situation at that time in depth. Those personal and social experiences were closely related with his after reportage on the choice of the subjects Secondly, Chen Ming Parn’s writing career will be emphasized with the method of the searching type. In the meanwhile, since his working experiences had a great impact on his writing works, the relationship with his reportage writing, editor’s reportage thesis and working experiences will also be discussed. Thirdly, it will talk about the influence and status of Chen Ming Parn’s reportage literary works. He made a great contribution to the field of reportage by emphasizing social problems, promoting social reforms, editing and publishing reportages’ books, and devoting himself to teach reportage. His book publications and literary works also have far-reaching impact on China and Taiwan. The above aspects will thus to prove the great status of his literary works. Chapter four is the analyses of Chen Ming Parn’s important reportage works. This chapter is the key part of the thesis. It will analyze Chen Ming Parn’s award-winning works of reportage and representative ones. The chapter will offer the evaluation of his reportage works and explore his choice on topics in depth. Lastly, it will analyze the writing form and summarize the characteristics of his works. Chapter five: The Critiques and Feedbacks of Chen Ming Parn’s Reportage Work. I used the critiques of literature scholars to investigate the pro’s and con’s of Chen’s work. Chapter six is the conclusion. It summarizes the rapid rising of Taiwan reportage in the seventies. Among the new leading writers, Chen Ming Parn was especially of significance. He set a reference for the veterans and new comers in this field. His work reflected tons of energy and warmth of caring the lower society. This corresponds to his unique and deep attention to the problems of society at that time. This chapter also makes future affirmation on his influence and contribution to reportage. Furthermore, his creative writing on certain topics had much impact and arose the attention from public. The feedbacks of such influences were also discussed in this chapter. In the end of this thesis, there are two appendixes enclosed. Appendix one is Chen Ming Parn’s writing chronological table. Appendix two is Taiwan aboriginal culture chronological table, including world chronological table.
