The existence of the tip vortex will not only reduce the lift force but also induce additional drag and leading to unnecessary noise. Therefore, this research is trying to suppress the structure and strength of the tip vortex through the modification of the tip shape, and to evaluate its effect on aerodynamic performance. In this study, the objects are wing and blade model with NACA0015 airfoil section. Wind tunnel tests were first carried out to investigate the effect of tip shape change on the destruction of vortex structure and their contribution on lift and drag. The optimal tip designs based on the results from wind tunnel experiments were then applied to the wind turbine blade for validation under real situation. According to the experimental results, sub-wing tip (front), sub-wing tip (middle), sub-wing /upper end-plate tip and BERP tip exhibit better overall performance for the wing models; on the other hand, sub-wing tip behaves better for the blade model. When the output efficiency of the wind turbine was evaluated, sub-wing blade did exhibit the same superior results as in the wind tunnel experiments, better than the standard blade. S. G.
