Water samples were taken from two major rivers and six big ditches in August and October, 2005, respectively. The water quality was evaluated by using River Pollution Index (RPI). Based on the evaluation by RPI from eight monitoring stations, one of the stations showed moderate pollution (33.3%), and two of the stations indicated serious pollution (66.7%). The results show the water near Xi-bin bridge station of the Zhuo-shui River basin does not meet the class-B water quality standard, and the failure water quality parameters includ BOD5, SS, T-P, NH3-N, E.coli, and Cu. The upstream station of the Bei-gang River has met the class-D standard; however, the downstream station has not met the class-C standard with certain failure parameters including BOD5, SS, NH3-N,and E.coli. Since the big ditch was not set the regulated standard by EPA, the analytical results were compared with environmental baseline values which were immediate protection of public health. The concentration of Cu in the Chao-jiang bridge and Tong-bei bridge monitoring stations was elevated and over the regulated standard(0.03 mg/l) in the first time sampling. It was also found that the anaerobic condition and elevated Cu level were often observed in all the big ditches investigated. Moreover, the elevated Cu concentration was consistently detected in both upstream and downstream of the You-cai-liao ditch. The elevated Cu level detected in the ditch was attributed to primarily due to the addition of cupper in the animal feeds for many livestock in the Yun-lin County. The low flowrate in the ditch further leads to accumulation and concentration of the metals. none 方鴻源 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 101 zh-TW
