There are six chapters in this thesis, chapter one proves research purposes, documents review, research approaches and subject matters first. From chapter two reach chapter five, use the approaches of the textual criticism of history and literary analyse to discuss the issues of the history, construction, and function, etc. of the mountain fastness in the novel.
The background of this novel is the Song dynasty. The various characters are perhaps the common people, who live in the villages peacefully, or the soldiers and government officers of basic level who garrison in some areas. For all kinds of the reasons, however, they passed through many places and flocked together to the mountains, then took the shelters in the mountain fastness. The militarized organization of the mountain fastness that built by all kinds of people in the “Outlaws of the Marsh” was quite obvious; the qualities and the formality of the combination of the characters in the mountain fastness was originated in the example of ‘Brotherhood In The Peach Garden’. These characteristics form the construction of the mountain fastness and offer external protection to the mountain fastness characters. The functions of the mountain fastness, including: the independent individual assembles to the united group; the absolute drifts one turns into the relative stability; they redeem themselves from the guilt. These functions strengthened the strength of mountain fastness characters, satisfied their spirits, improved the transformation of the thoughts, and promoted the conversion of the lives. When the characters of mountain fastness have external protections and inner satisfaction, they begin to ponder over the new process of the lives, that is accept the amnesty then return to the society. The characters of mountain fastness gain the identification of common people by execute the justices for the Heaven and carry out the loyalty and righteousness. Furthermore, they can earn the king’s concern and then absolved their guilt. The mountain fastness becomes the space where the characters transform and carry out their lives. They were turned from the bandits into the heroes, for the people need them and give the characteristics of chivalry, justice, and filial piety at the same time. They created the images of heroes and encouraging themselves. And the births of heroes are also the self-rescuing and self-expecting of the shouting crowd.
