No acetic acid residue in the composite films was confirmed from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the cross-section roughness of the samples increased with the addition of clay. SEM/EDS results indicated that in chitosan/modified clay composite films, clay was dispersed homogeneously throughout the chitosan matrix. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results indicated that the intercalated-clay structure was developed with additions of small amounts of modified clay to the chitosan matrix. The intercalated clay not only enhanced the thermal stability but also increased the Young’s modulus of the chitosan films.
