Also, the predictors of the hope of life were explored in this group. This study used a cross sectional, descriptive and correlation design with purposive sampling. The subjects included 244 inpatients selected from the chronic units, rehabilitation units, half-way homes and day care facilities in a psychiatric hospital in northern Taiwan. Data were collected by the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, and Health Related Hardiness Scale, Social Support Questionnaire, and Herth Hope Index. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 12.0 for Windows. ANOVA, t-test, Pearson’s correlation and multiple regressions were performed to analyze the data. The results included: (1) The frequency of inpatients’ psychopathological symptom was between “none” to “sometimes”. (2) The inpatients got moderate hardiness, social support and hope. (3) The inpatients perceived more social support from the hospital staff than from their families and relatives. (4) Gender, religious beliefs, employment, occupational training and characteristic of the unit were the predictors of the hope of life. (5) The hope of life correlated negatively with psychopathological symptom, but positively with hardiness and social support.(6) By the order of importance, the predictors were hardiness, social support, characteristic of the unit, occupational training and religious beliefs. All the predictors accounted for 31.6% of variance. The results of this study can provide valuable information to the staff of chronic units, half-way homes and day care facilities and help to design appropriate activities to improve the inpatients’ hope of life according to their hardiness and social support.
