Banana shows digestive promotion, anti-depression, anti- oxidation, and anticancer, Mature banana peel contains rich carotenoids, This study was to determine the carotenoids of the banana peel, and also its biological activities. Taiwan Pei Chial was used in this study Low-polar (n-hexane),semi-polar (ethylacetate) and high-polar (water) extracts were obtained for discussing the biological activities. Results showed that banana peel had better antioxidation than that of pulp. Low-polar (n-hexane) extract of banana peel showed perfect antioxidation and scavenging efficiency for free radicals. Low-polar extract of banana peel included α-carotene ß-carotene and lutein, and the levels of leutin were very high. In blue light exposure MTT assay test, blue light (430nm±30) could destroy ARPE-19 cell (human retinal pigment epithelial cell line). Low-polar extract of banana peel extract could restore the damage of ARPE-19 cell. In addition, Low-polar extract of banana peel inhibited the expression of COX-2 of KB cell and ARPE-19 cell.
