Description
Summary:碩士 === 中原大學 === 企業管理研究所 === 95 === With the popularity of Internet and information digitization, portable IT products like notebooks and mobile phones have rapidly developed and grown. Because of its advantages like flat panel, light-weight and low power consumption, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) has been riding this trend and growing in flying steps. Although Taiwan’s LCD industry started up behind Japan and Korea, it has grown apace. For year 2006, Taiwan has accounted for world’s number one output in large-size LCDs. This shows Taiwanese LCD industry’s healthy chain structure among upper-middle-lower streams and its maturity of technology. In addition, Taiwan also ranked world second largest in IC design industry, and driver IC design industry has played a critical role in the LCD arena in nowadays. This research focuses the strategies and development of driver IC design houses from the perspective of the LCD industry. The labor division model of Taiwanese industries is also one key factor of the industry’s evolution. As LCD’s demand side responses to driver IC’s supply side, and further, the labor division of which driver IC design houses cooperate with the upstream wafer fabs and the downstream assembly factories will facilitate the accumulation of professional technologies, and plus, driver IC design houses’ progress in technology will stimulate changes in demand structure, all the abovementioned have boosted the evolution of the industry. The future market growth of LCD industry still looks promising, especially when LCD panel manufacturers continue to stride into new-generation production lines and expand production capacity. For the competition in grasping and penetrating market share, driver IC design houses in Taiwan are now facing their competitors from Japan, Korea, and possibly from the emerging Mainland China. In order to survive and prosper in the fierce competition in this industry, Taiwan’s driver IC design houses need to position(or reposition) themselves in the industrial value chain according to different conditions by combining and utilizing various strategies effectively such as “defender strategy,” “prospector strategy,” “forward-integration strategy,” as well as “backward-integration strategy.”
