It can damage more than 300 crops. The common method to control this insect is to use the fiber board absorbed with the attractant, methyl eugenol, and the insecticide, naled. The fiber board is scattered in the field to attract and kill the fly. Naled, however, may easily degrade into dichlorvos through photo-reaction catalyzed by methyl eugenol. Firstly, the naled technical was microencapsu- lated to avoid the irradiation of UV light from sunshine. This capsulation technique protected naled from degradation. In the bio-efficacy test, the capsu- lated naled gave 2-3 times more mortality of the fly than the uncapsulated naled. Secondly, the UV absorbers were screened on their efficiencies to protect naled from UV irradiation. Out of 6 UV absorbers, 2-ethylhexyl-2-cyano-3,3- diphenylacrylate was the most efficient protector. After 6-day irradiation with UV lamps, 78% of naled survived under the protection of the above UV absor- ber. Only 37.6% of naled was left without any UV absorber added. Thirdly, the mixture of methyl eugenol and naled was treated with thickener to form a paste. The new paste formulation would not need the fiber board as the carrier. The paste can be applied inside the trap, on the pier or tree trunk. The field test of the new paste formulation was performed together with the traditional fiber board formulation, as control group. The field tests were done in Yilan, Taichung, Changhua and Kaoshiung. The average daily captures of the fly with the paste in the above areas were 4.8, 3.4, 2.8, and 7.8, respectively. The control group captured the daily average of 1.7, 3.8, 2.6, 7.8, respectively. As the conclusion of the field tests, the paste formulation is equal or better than the traditional formulation in capturing oriental fruit fly. Chia-Chung Chen 陳家鐘 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 69 zh-TW
