The researcher adopted the method of quasi-experiment, in-equivalent control group design, to investigate 266 freshmen from National Tainan Senior High to clarify the impacts which ability grouping do to the students’ academic achievement. Besides, questionnaires are delivered to teachers being responsible for the subject to further understand the effects of ability grouping teaching. And results of the research are listed below: 1. Ability grouping makes significant difference between the academic achievement of experimental group students and the academic achievement of control group students. The grade of control group students is higher than the grade of experimental group students. 2. The strategies of ability grouping applied to the experimental group students also makes significant difference. The students who get ability grouping teaching make gradually improvement in their academic achievement. 3. After implementing the ability grouping teaching, students of higher academic achievement group get greater improvement than students of lower academic achievement group. 4. The attitude which teachers adopt to the ability grouping teaching will influence the outcome of the ability grouping teaching method. Teachers tend to consider that students of higher academic achievement group will achieve the learning goals more easily and students of lower academic achievement group need more pre-teaching preparation and extra complement teaching to help them learning. Besides, teachers will hardly shift their teaching materials or teaching methods to cope with the ability grouping teaching. And because of the ability grouping, students have to go to different classroom to attend class. That makes the discipline of a class hard to control, the learning improvement of students hard to track, and the teaching progress hard to plan. And according to results of the study, the researcher makes 3 suggestions: 1. Before implementing ability grouping teaching, teachers should be given adequate information of the teaching method. That could significantly improve the effectiveness of the ability teaching and the interaction between teachers and students. 2. The communication between teachers and school administration units is also necessary. 3. Keeping implementing the policy of senior high school communitizing and increasing the opportunities of further studying for teachers and school administrators are the suggestions to the Ministry of Education.
