This study is aimed at understanding the positive influence housework participation has on school children and the situation of school children’s housework participation, in an attempt to have a better understanding of the current situation, effects and difficulties of the Home Economics Education and encouragement of housework participation. Suggestions for improvement are also proposed.
Depth-interviews with 8 teachers and parents were conducted, and the results are concluded as below.
A.Teachers and parents hold the same opinion on the content of school children’s housework participation, and all recognize the positive influence it has on school children. As a result, their attitudes toward school children’s housework participation are positive and encouraging.
B.Teachers recognize the intention of the Home Economics Education in primary schools is good, and this policy conforms to their teaching philosophy.
C.Currently, the implementation and the encouragement of Home Economics Education in primary schools can be examined from the school’s and the teacher’s perspectives. However, the parents’ viewpoints are not exactly the same as the teachers’.
D.When implementing and encouraging the Home Economics Education, 4 types of reactions can be found in school students, including “Passive” Type, “Up-and-up” Type, “ Accustomed” Type, and “ Enjoyable” Type. In addition, the longer the students receive Home Economics Education, the higher percentage of students with more active and positive reactions.
E.Teachers’ encouragement, parents’ request and students’ interests are all important factors that will influence students’ housework participation, but parents’ request and home education are the most influential ones.
F.Teachers and parents both believe that the promotion of Home Economics Education can encourage and underline school children’s housework participation, but currently, the implementation of the Home Economics Education and the effects of their housework participation are not quite satisfactory.
G.There are many limitations and difficulties of the implementation of Home Economics Education and encouragement of children’s housework participation, such as “lack of materials and references”, “little interests in it”, “overemphasis on education promotion”, “lack of time for implementation”, “insufficient classroom and facilities”, “teachers’ lack of professional knowledge on Home Economics Education” and “parents’ inability to cooperate”. Among all, “overemphasis on education promotion” is a very important factor, which is the same as the parents’ opinion.
H.Teachers and parents provide their valuable ideas on the limitation and difficulties of the implementation of Home Economics Education and encouragement of children’s housework participation, such as “ask the consulting team to provide complete teaching materials and supplementary information”, “education authorities should hold more seminars on Home Economics Education”, “reduce the courses and homework so that there will be sufficient time for Home Economics Education and children can have more time participating in housework”, “schools shall demonstrate more results of Home Economics Education to get more recognition and support from the parents”, and “set now education policies or amend old ones to eliminate the bias in favor of school scores and advancement of higher education”.
The followings are the four suggestions are proposed for education authorities’ and professional staff’s reference based on the research results.
A.To implement the Home Economics Education and to encourage school children to participate in housework, it is suggested that authorities concerned should arouse the public’s attention and concern on them.
B.To solve the difficulties and problems when implementing the Home Economics Education and encouraging school children to participate in housework, as well as to agglomerate the strength, it is suggested that the authorities start from the education policy.
C.To thoroughly implement the Home Economics Education and to encourage school children to participate in housework, it is suggested that the authorities have corresponding measures and equipment.
D.To avoid distortion of the purpose of education and to establish the subjectivity of education to implement the Home Economics Education, and to foster primary teachers’ capabilities of “self-reflection”.
As for suggestions for future researches, the research area can be expanded to other cities or even to the whole Taiwan, while the subjects of research can also include administrative staff as well. As for the research methods, quantitative researches or other critical viewpoints can be adopted in an attempt to have a more thorough and better understanding of it.
