Carbon nanotubes field emission display (CNT-FED) is an advanced display technology and a strong competitor in this field. As important as the backlight of a thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD), carbon nanotubes backlight unit (CNT-BLU) is a critical component of CNT-FED. Therefore CNT-BLU is a worthy material to study. There are two purposes of this research as follows: one is to search and collect all the patents related to CNT-BLU through United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database, and then analyze the bibliometric data of those patents such as nation, patent assignee, inventor, and International Patent Classification (IPC). Another is to use the patent indicators which set by CHI Research Inc. to do citation analysis. These patent indicators could make researchers get better understanding about the status of competition nations in this field and technology development status. The results of this research are as follows: (1) Nation aspect Japan is the leading nation at patent significance, technology impact, and technology capability; South Korea is the fastest nation at technology innovation; Austria is the best one to connect technology innovation with basic science; United States of America is the leading competitor to establish patent portfolio with basic science in this field. (2) Patent assignee aspect Kabushiki Kaisha Toshiba is the leading competitor at patent significance, technology impact, and technology innovation speed; Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. owns the best technology capability in this field; Electrovac Fabrikation Elektrotechnischer Spezialartikel GmbH is the best one to connect technology innovation with basic science; NGK Insulators, Ltd. is the leading competitor to establish patent portfolio with basic science in this field.
