The activity of bicycle traveling is a social arena for expanding social circle and accumulating personal social capital. The interactions of traveling cyclists show that social capital is a significant role. There is limited research about social capital applied to recreation. The purposes of this research are: (1) to explore the social capital’s latent constructs of traveling cyclists, (2) to test and verify serious leisure model of traveling cyclists, (3) to discuss the influence of social-demographics to social capital and serious leisure characteristics, and (4) to understand the relationship between social capital and serious leisure characteristics of traveling cyclists. The collected data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), one-way ANOVA, and Structural Equation Model (SEM). Internet questionnaires collected from November 10 to December 8, 2006. A total of 408 usable questionnaires were returned from 458. Social capital scale were based on Bullen and Onyx’s eight social capital measuring domains, which include participation in local community, proactivity in a social context, feelings of trust and safety, neighborhood connections, family and friends connections, tolerance of diversity, value of life, and work connections. 17 questions were made after interview traveling cyclists. Using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), four latent constructs were extracted, which are activity norm, friends trust, activity participation and friends connections. 22 Serious leisure items were based on Stebbins’ research. At verified the model, which included need to persevere, career, personal effort, durable benefits, identify, and unique ethos, six factors. The results were as follow: (1) Only age and education level had significant difference on social capital constructs. Age showed significant influences on friends trust, activity participation, and friends connections. The education level had significant differences on activity norm, friends trust, and activity participation. (2) Only age and education level had significant difference on serious leisure constructs. Age showed significant influences on need to personal effort and durable benefits.. The education level had significant differences on need to personal effort, durable benefits, identify. (3) The SEM model showed that there was a significant relationship between social capital and serious leisure of traveling cyclists and the correlation coefficient was 0.80. From this model, friends trust and friends connections were stronger than activity norm and activity participation in social capital’s constructs. Identify, unique ethos, durable benefits, and personal effort were stronger than need to persevere and career in serious leisure’s constructs. From the results, the government should popularize bicycle travel, and people can easily engage in it and join the activity with family to increase social capital.
