Based on The Film of “Goodbye, Lenin!” 《再見列寧》電影字幕翻譯研究 Huang, Lan-Li 黃蘭麗 碩士 輔仁大學 德國語文學系 95 Translation is a bridge, leading people to worlds of foreign language. Translation plays an important role in the film. Translation of the subtitles not only presents a film script or actors’ dialogue , but also reveals their connotation. There are two kinds of film translation. One is translation in dubbing, which must correspond to actor’s tone and mouth shape. The audience’s hearing perception should also be considered in dubbing translation. The other is subtitle translation, it is more than merely translating a film script literally. The subtitle must help the audience to understand the plot development under two restrictions on time (speech speed) and space (screen space); furthermore, the subtitle must pass the information with accuracy and completeness. So film translation is challenging task. Translators overcome the above-mentioned difficulties and adopt riper translating strategies, to achieve the communicating function of the film. In this theses subtitle translation will be discussed based on the theory of “Functionalism”. The Chinese translation of the movie “Goodbye, Lenin!” is to be demonstrated as an example. The thesis is consists of divided into six chapters. Chapter one introduces the motive and the structure of the thesis. Chapter two is about the introduction of the term “Functionalism” and its historical backgrounds. Chapter three will discuss the subtitles, function and character and subtitle translation strategies. As a result of using different translation strategies, translators can communicate with readers in their own ways by presenting different images of an article or a literary work. In the fourth chapter, the background and synopsis of “Goodbye, Lenin!” are presented. The fifth chapter represents the main part of this thesis, the translation analysis in available works. The conclusion discusses the interrelation between “Functionalism” and Chinese subtitles. Hu, Kung-Tze 胡功澤 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 137 zh-TW
