Description
Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 翻譯學研究所在職專班 === 95 === Abstract Lust for Life, a biography of Vincent Van Gogh, provides art-lovers with important materials of Impressionism and has been well-known in Taiwan because of its Chinese translator Yu Kwang-chung. Based on the Chinese version of Lust for Life, the thesis aims to analyze the structure of language, the art and historical background of this book so as to generalize some basic principles of art translation. From the viewpoint of translation, the Chinese version of this book is the field of interdisciplinary study. The way that Yu dealt with the literal expression of art activity was different from that of popular literature or other professional areas. In addition to avoid translationese and keep simplicity, Yu added lots of annotations and textual criticism involving art and thus established his translation strategy of this book. The focus of this thesis is centered on the translation of art, including the research of the motives, images, scenes, painters and paintings in each chapter. By means of methodology of art history, the iconology and iconography, we can be closer to the mind of Van Gogh, allowing us to measure the accuracy and fluency of Yu’s translation with better understanding. Yu’s Chinese version provides a good example that familiarity both with language and art is crucial to art writing, and the translation strategy that he adopted could be applied to similar art translation as well.
