Facing organization expansion and continuous competition, the biggest challenge for the management is how to utilize the information technology to improve competitiveness of the enterprise. Past research was seldom historical record of the implementation of the information system (IS). Also there was seldom research about the distributor’s implementation of the IS. This research uses historical method to investigate the objectives, functions, and applications of at various stages of the implementation of IS. Analyzing the implementation of a distributor’s IS, we understand how business utilizes the information technology to effectively solve the operational problems. By the historical method, we induce a development pattern of a distributor’s IS and the construction of IS for a multinational corporation.
The research shows that the computerization of an enterprise must proceed in an orderly way. The transition of the IS must coordinate with the company's strategies and long term plans and the business must develop its IS personnel. The IS needs to improve continually to match the organization’s learning, the characteristics and the resources of the business, and the management innovation corresponding to the changes in information technology. The integration of “work flows”, “business intelligence” and the information system will strengthen the enterprise's capability in global logistics.
The contribution of the research is using the historical method and data compilation tools to investigate implementation and development of a case’s IS. Past studies was seldom historical-method approach research on implementing IS, we provide an empirical example of implementing a distributor’s IS in a cascade approach. This research helps us to understand the implementation and development of an enterprise’s IS and it can be reference for future study in implementation of IS. We obtain the development of an enterprise's IS and identify the characteristics and possible problems at various stages of the information system development.
