The results of this research reveal not only the contents and meanings of activities for architectural modification, but also the relationship between the architecture and climatic environment by the knowing about application of material, construction and form for architectural modification on colonial architecture.
This research indicates three processes for the experiences of climatic and environmental modification on colonial architecture during Japanese period. The first step was that Japanese learned and imitated from the experiences of the Western tropical colonies during the initial dominion. The second step was that the Japanese developed the technologies and conducted independent research during the stable dominion. The last step was that Japanese devoted to the research of tropical architecture for immigration under the policy of tropical expansion. These processes also represented the attempt at modernization in modern Japan.
In addition, the characteristics of the colonial architecture due to the climatic and environmental modification were influenced by the development of architectural hygiene. The methods of architectural adaptations changed with the development of the colonial architectural styles and construction technologies. In other aspect, the historical transition of the colonial architecture appearance partly represented the need and thought of the colonial architects on architecture adaptation, which were gradually satisfied by the quick development of architectural materials and technologies. Meanwhile, the investigations of modification became a kind of the academic activities in the colony and the metropolis. The academic achievement became the additional values on solving the architecture adaptation. The occurrence of the anti climatic and environmental modification on the Japanese colonial architecture was related to the popular architectural style, consideration on construction expenses and gradual adaptation to the climate in Taiwan for the Japanese.
