This study featured soil moisture and pore water pressure measurements. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of shallow slope failure associated with internal soil moisture and/or pore water pressure responses. It was found that failure of the toe of the slope induced by infiltration and/or rainfall should accounted for the initiation of slope failure. The inflection points on the response curves of soil moisture and pore water pressure for the soil moisture and piozometers placed at the bottom of the slope occurred at approximately the same time, suggesting that these points can be good indicators for the onset of shallow slope failure. It was also shown that the moisture responses for the moisture sensors located 0.2m under the surface can be described by two-step rising curves, corresponding to the downward progress of wet front and upward progress of saturation front (or water table), respectively.
