Abstract
With the rise of feminist thought, female’s issues have been concerned in Taiwan over last two decades. However, studies of women in sports are still rare. Purpose of this study is to prospect the development of sports and its relationship with women in Taiwan during three different stages: Japanese Era (1895-1945), Authoritarian Period (1945-1986), and Post-Martial Law Period (1986-2006). This thesis is a synthesis of feminist theories, documents, files, and historical events. It examines the development of sports and female’s role under the political, educational, and cultural influence in Taiwan over last century. This study illustrates that, during Japanese colonial era, woman sports started with the Japanese government abolished the undesirable custom such as foot-binding, and promotion of girl’s education in schools. In schools, physical education curriculum was changed from games to gymnastics and athletics, and later for national defense. During the authoritarian period, girl’s physical education inherited Japanese school curriculum. In social sports, female participation was still lower than male. In post-martial law period, with the rise of democratization and feminism in both political and social fields, the development of women sports showed more liberty and diversity. In the conclusion, the development of sports and feminism in Taiwan in those three stages are summary.
