His hard work and dedication to the creation and promotion of children’s literature have made significant contributions to advance and raise the standard of Taiwanese children’s literature. This thesis explores Liu’s world of children’s literature, beginning with peripheral discussions such as his background, writing history and creative concepts. Further, the various genres and styles employed in his works are investigated which will help us determine Liu’s distinguishing features. This thesis is divided into seven chapters. The purpose and contents of each chapter are highlighted as follows: Chapter 1 “Introduction”: Explains the motivation, the scope, research methods and limitations for the study and defines the overall structure. Chapter 2 “Liu and his world of children’s literature”: With Liu’s biographical profile and his writing history, the way how the seeds of literature sprouted and bloomed in his mind is presented. As Liu considers writing to be his lifetime career, we will briefly go over the works he has published. Chapter 3 “Research on children’s stories”: The choice of topics in children’s stories, sometimes termed as fairy tales, is analyzed to explore the storyline and structure. How characters are depicted in Liu’s works is also analyzed which reveals that his stories function adequately as an educational means, create a merry atmosphere and allow readers to imagine and re-create. Chapter 4 “Research on children’s poetry”: Liu’s choice of sources and topics derives from children’s real life, communicating naive and lovely sentiments as well as faithfully reflecting children’s emotions. Liu’s careful design of style offers his works highly refined rhetoric and harmonic rhythm. Chapter 5 “Research on children’s songs”: The topics, features, sentence patterns, structure and linguistic art of Liu’s children’s songs are analyzed. It enables readers to better understand Liu’s creative features and to attract readers to his works. Chapter 6 “Research on children’s prose”: Children’s prose mentioned in this thesis refers to articles specially meant for children. Four aspects of children’s prose written by Liu are examined in this chapter: types, features inferred from contents and styles, character images and educational values. It is hoped that children’s language capabilities can be improved through extensive reading of children’s prose. Chapter 7 “Summary”: The research indicates that Liu’s works on children’s literature not only present a mosaic of truth, goodness and beauty but also approach children’s life and win readers’ sympathy. As a result, a clear understanding of his overall features will help teachers, researchers and creative writers of children’s literature with their related studies.
