Abstract
This research study incorporates character education into visual art education curriculum design. Its purposes are to help junior high school students clarify their values, develop healthy characters through the power of art, discussion and sharing. As students began to value themselves and care for others, the teacher-researcher collected data, reflected on her own teaching, and analyzed students’ learning in this course. Descriptions of the curriculum, its implementation process as well as the teacher’s personal growth are documented.
Research questions of this study include: 1. What are the theories and teaching strategies of character education? 2. How to design a visual art curriculum based on the core value(s) of character education? 3. What are the teacher’s personal growth and reflection as results of this action research experience? 4. What are students’ learning outcomes?
After carefully examining character and art education theories and related studies, the researcher designed a curriculum using “big ideas” approach, and developed “five plus three teaching models”. Exploratory and pilot studies helped to guide the curriculum structure, which led to the development of the curriculum focused on idea of “Caring for Oneself and Caring for Others”.
The research findings are as the followings.
1. Value clarification writing exercises as well as discussion questions used by the teacher are
very helpful. They can lead students think thoroughly on their possible choices, openly
acknowledge their values, and take follow up actions.
2. Personalize the learning context and use events happening in their lives can enhance
students’ learning interests and deepen their understanding.
3. Integrating character education into visual art education can help students learn more about
themselves, explore future career and life options.
4. This curriculum focuses on the importance of caring contribute to student and their parents’
understanding of each other.
5. Curriculum activities improved teacher-student interactions, which in turn enhanced the
curriculum design and students’ learning.
The researcher suggests that future research studies can involve parents and other teachers. Teacher should also emphasize the role art plays in social critique, engage the whole school, attend to societal needs, and take actions.
