For these purposes we selected a family in central southern Taiwan that has adopted home school practice. Relevant data are obtained through observation, interview, as well as document analysis. The following conclusions are generated from this analysis. 一、Reasons for schooling at home: (一)Disaffection over the neglect of personal development of children in school and often unbalanced nature of school curriculum suggest the idea of schooling at home. (二)The particular factors in the family that lead to the decision to have children educated at home. (三)Confidence about homeschooling gained from examples of such practices in other families and the finding that children under home school program have improved their potentiality. 二、Home school curriculum and instruction (一)Curriculum and instruction give emphasis on the cultivation of virtues and character formation. (二)The contents of instruction cover four major areas: the organization and selection of teaching materials emphasize children’s need, goal, interest, besides the degree of difficulty. (三)Generally the head of the family is the main teacher, supplemented by other specialized teachers. (五)The time schedule and the setting of instruction are flexible and adaptable, not restricted by any fixed pattern. (六)The instruction in home school is assessed mainly in terms of formative evaluation and criterion-referenced evaluation. 三、Special features of instruction in home school (一)The instructions focus on the students, emphasizes their interest in learning, individualizes the curriculum, promotes basic learning, concentrates on the interaction between children and father, and includes multiple age level. (二)Parents in home school program can integrate their role of a teacher and that of a moral cultivator. Moreover, the instruction can be reinforced through exemplary teaching as well as reflection. (三)Children under home school program are often characterized by active reading, humble learning, and active discrimination and choice of good study groups. 四、Factors affecting the curriculum and instruction of homeschooling (一)Home school curriculum and instruction are centrally affected by the beliefs, expertise, personality, and available time of the head of family. (二)Children’s personal attributes and interest, etc. also play an important role (三)the orientation of a home school program could be affected by the committee members. 五、The problems encountered and the ways to solve them (一)Be firm and reticent when confronted by the peculiar view of outsiders (二)Handle the problems with curriculum and instruction in a spirit of reflection and self-examination. (三)Calmly deal with the problems of home schoolers in their interpersonal interactions. (四)With reference to the problem of inadequate teaching materials for home school, try hard to search for suitable materials from various sources. The way to conduct homeschooling at the senior high level, however, remains uncertain. Based on the research findings above, it is proposed to those intending to do home school, the educational authorities, the general population and future researches.
