The research is conducted with qualitative methods. Through the semi-structured interviews with Xiou-Nan, a male early childhood teacher who has been teaching for four years in a private preschool, and the related persons, together with the observation and data analysis, to show a picture of Xiou-Nan’s pre-service and novice stage. The findings showed that Xiou-Nan’s career motive, quite similar to the majority of male early childhood teachers, is the altruism—coming from the personal goodwill. With emotional and economic supports of the spouse, relatives, and close friends, Xiou-Nan had encountered fewer obstacles during his pre-service stage. As to the novice stage, Xiou-Nan was challenged for not only the inexperience, but also the male identity. Therefore, the problems of a novice male teacher has thus become rather complicated due to the factors of profession abilities and gender role. When facing the challenges at a novice stage, Xiou-Nan has developed the following strategies: (1) To set up appropriate objectives for improvement, (2) to pro-actively seek for internal/external supports, (3) to communicate with each other for better understanding, (4) to demonstrate male characteristic in teaching, and (5) to persist a positive attitude, and has gradually overcome the obstacles. As his performance is closely related to the circumstances, Xiou-Nan is able to demonstrate a greater ability and distinguish characteristic with more and more self-confidence. Based on the findings, suggestions to male/female early childhood teachers, the superintendent of preschools, teacher training educations, and the future research are proposed.
