The results showed that various polymer films have different burst effect at the beginning of the release, and then the release rates decrease continuously. However, the release rates of colchicine increased while the polymer films were immersed in the buffer solution after 21 days. Following 28 days experiment, the PLA film exhibited the maximum accumulated releasing percentage of the colchicine, but the maximum average releasing rate appeared in the PLGA50:50 films. Colchicine is a photosensitive substance. The stability of colchicine structure inside polymer films was investigated by lighting polymer films containing colchicines for twenty-four hours. The major photoproduct, β-lumicolchicines, and colchicines in the solution were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography. The results indicated that the accumulated releasing percentage of colchicines from lighted films were all less than the unlighted films. The accumulated releasing ratio of β-lumicolchicines/colchicines from PLGA films was six to ten times of PLA film, which implied that polymer films containing colchicines affect the photoproduct generation of the colchicine. Moreover, the PLGA with higher molar ratio of lactide versus glycolide had less generation of β-lumicolchicines and stabilized the colchicine structure more.
