Many publishing houses invite famous writers to comment on the book and list the prizes or awards of the book. However the publishing houses in Taiwan often ignore the quality of the translation and translation techniques or strategies. Translation techniques or strategies should be mentioned in the book because it allows the reader to understand the differences between the source text and the translation. In most of translated works, the editor’s priority lies in the fluency of the translation rather than the faithfulness to the original, which certainly affect the reader’s reading experiences of the books. As a result, a critical approach for analyzing translations is very much in need. The aim of this thesis is to develop a critical approach to analyze a literary translated Work. This approach is adapted from Katharina Reiss'' theory in the book “Moeglichkeit und Grenzen der Uebersetzungskritik. Kategorien und Kriterien fuer eine sachgerechte Beurteilung“ von Uebersetzung. Reiss is an important scholar developing German Functional Theory of Translation. Her book is used as the theoretical basis for analyzing the original text “Drei Geschichten und eine Betrachtung”, written by Patrick Sueskind, and to compare it with the translated text. According to Reiss'' theory, there are two steps in criticizing a translation: first step, to find out the proper critical criteria in terms of the functional aspect of the original text, and second, to analyze the linguistic features in the text (such as semantical briefing, lexical briefing, grammatical briefing and stylistic briefing) Apart from the analysis of the linguistic features, there are features beyond linguistic features (such as, situation context, terminology, time, location, addressee, author and affective implication) that should be considered. By comparison, whether the translator maintained the original meanings and expressions is self-evident. In the translated text, the author adapted Chinese ways of thinking in the text and attempted to explain the original meaning to the reader. The translator takes the changes and expressions of the text into consideration in order to reach the expectation of the reader. The translator, instead of carrying out a literal translation which might be difficult for the reader to consume, chooses dynamic translation by using Chinese proverbs. In other words, this strategy would not only increase the readability of the translation, but also make the reading process more enjoyable. The observation of this thesis hopes to serve as a future reference for the analysis and critic of the works by Patrick Sueskind. This thesis uses the methods proposed by Katharina Reiss, which intends to shed a light for translators on discussing the style, the language and the target reader of the translation.
