IC testing houses perform the last phase of the process and face customer demand uncertainties and order scheduling with setup complexity. Therefore the management must focus on capacity planning and production scheduling to increase the profit and improve delivery performance. This study constructs an Arena simulation program to model the order planning and scheduling process. The first phase is capacity reservation. We determine a capacity reservation ratio for accepting regular orders. We also use a simple rule to accept rush orders. The second phase is order scheduling in process. We use different dispatching rules including FIFO, EDD and a third rule that considers both setup and due date factors. The simulation model compares different planning and scheduling strategies in terms of finish lot sizes, number of setups, order tardiness, and net profit. Simulation result shows that capacity reservation ratio affects the overall performance significantly. We also find that short-term dispatching rules can improves operation efficiency, and affects mid-term capacity planning strategies to increase the profit.
