Ching-Ju Lin Abstract The purposes of the study were to explore the effects that the first-grade students had learned place value concepts on mathematics textbook. Through the understanding of the pupils’ performance on the place value concepts, the researcher expects to understand what were the difficulties of the elementary school students to learn the place value concepts and what were the reasons that forming the difficulties on their learning of the place value concepts. The research design of the study was focusing on both of quantities and qualities to analyze the first-grade pupils learning on the place value units of mathematics. There were 345 first-grade students of the elementary school in Pingtung county participated the study. There were 18 pupils out of the 345 samples receiving about 20 minutes one by one interviewing on the classroom. After collecting and analyzing the data, the study found out the following conclusions: 1. On the number counting, there were many first-grade pupils usually counting by the sequence without considering the place value concepts. Being confused by the habit counting number forward and the way counting number one-by-one, the students easily make the wrong answer to the question. 2. When learning the place value, first-grade pupils are comparatively inefficient to transmit the unit well. 3. When comparing other numbers, first-grade pupils easily judge the amount of a number according to the space of its image─big or small; long or short, and neglect the place value of a number. 4. first-grade pupils may only think of two one-digit numbers and their positions, not consider the meaning of the place value, while they ate studying two-digit number. 5. Coins used as teaching aids to help students develop place value concepts have both the positive and negative affect. Finally, the research also offers some suggestions. For one, place value instructing should add more hand-operated learning activities. So pupils can have more chances to develop place value concepts well. For another, coins are recommended as good teaching aids to help pupils concrete the place value. However, they should be carefully used in case of being confused with the value of the coins themselves. Key words: Place value, Number concepts, first-grade. 蘇順德 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 145 zh-TW
