It is widely used in underwater communication systems, radar, sonar, and navigation system for the purposes of target positioning, beam-forming, and tracking. How to effectively improve the system’s resolution as well as to correctly estimate the signal parameters needed is still the topic of interest for many researchers. Underwater communication tends to be influenced by the complicated environment under the ocean which causes multipath to the signals. This phenomenon will lead to amplitude variation, which eventually reduces the estimation efficiency. Therefore, improving the performance of signal DOA is an objective for this study. In this study, Automatic Gain Control (AGC) method was proposed to overcome the problem of unstable signals. In addition, TIMS simulations and underwater experiments were conducted to verify the performance of AGC applied in signal DOA. The DOA estimation system was carried out by Lab-View and Matlab in TIMS simulations. Subsequently, the designed system was deployed in Bi-Sha Fishing Harbor of Keelung to perform verification for the actual underwater environment. The experimental results have demonstrated that the implementation of simple AGC method certainly improves the performance of signal DOA.
