Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 教育心理與諮商學系碩士班 === 95 === This study uses hermeneutic phenomenology as the research approach to explore the father-son experience of male undergraduates.The study accesses the interviewees’ subjective world of father-son experiences through semi-structured interviews.After collecting and analyzing the texts, the results are presented in two parts. First, the father interviewees’ father-son experience and stories are discussed by contextual writing. The common essences extracted from the interviewees’ father-son experiences are then discussed and concluded. The study shows that the father-son experience of male undergraduates go through three periods. Each period and its contents are presented as follows: 1. The childhood period: “Strictness” is the most vivid image during this stage. In addition, the image of an exalted, omniscient and all-round father is also common during this stage. On the other hand, the relationship between father and son during this stage akin to leading-obeying relationship. When it comes to the father’s expected life principles and orders, the male tends to obey in order to avoid from the father’s scolding and punishing. As for father’s expectation for the academic performance, they move toward father’s expectation unconsciously. 2. The turning period: The father image that the male perceives in this stage is not all-round and omniscient. The male begins to challenge the father through different ways; and the father-son relationship becomes tense as it experiences conflicts. As for father’s expectation for the academic performance, the male faces it by creating a self-controlled approach that enables him to meet the father’s expectations. If father’s expectation is unrealistic or out of their personal goals, they choose to obey passively; therefore, to reach the father’s minimum expectations and goals. 2. The current period: The male undergraduate perceives father as becoming frail and almost irrelevant. Though father is not so unapproachable as they used to be when the undergraduate was younger, father is still perceived as the dominant figure in son’s lives. In most cases, they would try to build a communicative channel with their fathers, but father is still the core of the power. During this stage, the male feels that he carries a burden of expectation to honor their father by achieving and thereby attaining father’s expectations. To conclude, this study produces some reflections based upon the research process and findings.
