The framework of portfolio assessment was based on review of art appreciation assessment literature. It was a quasi-experimental study with one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were thirty-five sixth-grade students from a regular class. The study consisted of 15-week art appreciation instruction, a pre-test at the beginning of semester, and art appreciation portfolio assessment at the end of the semester. The major research tools were the art appreciation portfolio, art appreciation ability test, art appreciation self awareness test, art appreciation attitude test. Every piece of works in the art appreciation portfolio was scored separately by the same scoring rubrics. In addition, the whole portfolio was scored. The dimensions of scoring rubrics were content integrity, organization, personal style, artistry, and goal attainment. The major findings were the following: First, art appreciation portfolio assessment could enhance students’ art appreciation ability. Second, students learned the essentials of art appreciation. Third, portfolio assessment could develop students’ reflective ability. Fourth, students’ learning interesting was improved. Fifth, the reliability and validity of portfolio were good. And finally, portfolio provided the tool for teachers and students to examine the learning processes of art appreciation.
