Started for the last few years of 20th century, major disc makers such as RiTek and CMC expanded their capacity of CD-R to compete with each other, which makes the price of CD-R rapidly dropped down due to serious over supplying. This phenomenon forced some Japanese disc makers and some other small-scaled disc makers resigned from the CD-R market, and also. On the other hand, CD-R’s storage space is enough to most of the users, along with its inexpensive price, make it the standing of the majority among the recordable media market, which also delayed the time table of DVD-R’s emergence. Therefore, since DVD-R appears on the market in 1998, its sales volume had been compressed for 3 to 4 years-- until 2003, its year of boost up. However, many plants which originally products CD-Rs changed their equipment to produce DVD-R, which accelerated the volume of DVD-R produced, and also made the sales price of DVD-R, similar as that of CD-R, slump. In order to have a competitive advantage for the upcoming rivalry of next-generation optical disc, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding for the characteristics of disc industry, then discuss that how to find a optimal product strategy for the industry with rapidly-declining sales price.
