In this study, the research adopts action research method and takes the intermediate grade students from the elementary school where the researcher is teaching as the target of study. The researcher divides those students into heterogeneous groups according to the “Student Teams-Achievement Division” (STAD) method. In the process of research, information is collected and analyzed through interviews, questionnaires, observation and notes taking. From practical teaching settings, the researcher has discovered the difficulties in teaching and learning and made modifications and improvements in the teaching strategies again and again based on his own observation and suggestions from his critical friends. After implementation of actions and analysis, the primary findings in this study are as follows: 1.A lot of incorrect concepts about small group discussion are found after it is implemented by new teachers, which should be avoided by all teachers. 2.The implementation of cooperative learning in class can be divided into four phases: honeymoon, bottleneck, exploration, and correct approach. Each phase has its own characteristics and something to be noticed for teaching. 3.It is expected that the teachers shall solve the difficulties in cooperative operation, peer tutoring, assessment and incentive methods, interaction among parents, teachers and students, and grouping methods with their wisdom. From this study, the researcher has found a great deal of teaching experiences which are worthy of further discussion. 4.The researcher has tried to mix games playing within cooperative learning so as to arouse students’ motives in study. 5.The researcher has showed his concern over a group member being pushed aside to the corner by others, and the process of his giving guidance to the student can serve as a good example for others to learn.
