No matter told by parents, teachers, classmates or delivered through audio tapes and books, those popular stories never bore children. However, there not enough children’s books representative of the local culture available to children in Taiwan. Through the introduction of Taiwanese folktales, the researcher attempted to provide elementary school students a better understanding about the history of our ancestors’ endeavors, living styles, and religious customs, so as to broaden their vision, identify with their hometown, and pass on the local culture. This study focused on three aspects, including family manners, social customs, and folk beliefs, to investigate the customs and beliefs of our ancestors reflected on Taiwanese folktales and explain the meanings behind these customs and cultures as a reference for teachers. This study had its importance in three aspects: (1) The distribution and collection of Taiwanese folktales was organized; (2) As folktales feature the property of literatures, content of folk cultures, and the practicality of social teaching, it could serve as a value system for us to understand the social culture of our ancestors; and (3) The intelligence and experience of our ancestors presented by this value system could be used to teach children to protect and respect the local cultures by passing on the cultures. 林文寶 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 156 zh-TW
