With ink and brush, artists play with the skills of Ts'un and coloring so as to give expressions of their feelings in the landscapes of their paintings. The use of paper and silk and the interplay of poetry, calligraphy and painting instill into ink painting a unique oriental aesthetic sentiment. With the advances in technology, the techniques of computer software and hardware have been upgraded quickly. This has directly contributed to the creative works of contemporary artists, encouraging creation through computer animation. Wash painting in computer animation, combining traditional art and digital moving images and sound, unfolds to an opportunity for innovation, which specifically combines the traditional and the modern for artistic presentation and representation. The creative work, “Castle Beyond a Mountain” has its inspiration from Fan K'uan’s painting, “Travelers Among Mountains and Streams.” in North Sung dynasty. The methodology of the research is based on a qualitative analysis of the historical scrutiny, case study and creation practice. Fist of all, the study investigates different genres of ink painting animations through an analysis of their aesthetic image styles. Second, by comparison and contrast, the study probes into the value and the representation of image styles of computer animation art. Finally, through script drawing and experimental creation, the spatial layers of the landscape in wash painting was simulated in three dimension computer animation. 3D computer animation features graphic processing and cubic space conception. Therefore, it is able to simulate an imaginary space of virtual reality. Not only does it enrich the imagination of artistic thinking and imagination, but also enable the combination of traditional Chinese painting and animation art to form a brand new creative subject. On the whole, through an adaptation of traditional Chinese painting with computer animation and the presentation of Chinese painting skill called “Ts'un,” “Castle Beyond a Mountain” instills the concept of time and space into animation techniques, infusing moving effects into two dimensional visual experience of painting. Hence, the creation work presents a virtual world in which the space of water and ink mingles with the imaginary world. In an innovative sense of creative vision, the work reinterprets the visual experience of traditional Chinese painting and represents traditional images with modern significance.
