The thesis designs a full-order rotor flux observer which is further compared to conventional open-loop flux observers, which include current-model and voltage-model flux observers. All observers are compared and verified using both simulation and experiments. Both simulation and experimental results show that the full-order flux observer, though more complicated in computation, outperforms open-loop flux observers. The thesis then applies the full-order flux observer with an adaptive speed estimator to realize speed-sensorless direct vector control. In particular, a current regulation term can successfully stabilize the regenerative braking of the drive during low speed operation. The controllable speed range is from 40 to 2000 rpm. The experiments of this thesis are based on a PC-based digital control board.
