Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣科技大學 === 設計研究所 === 95 === In this research, we explored extensively influences of Zen on product design. We described the generally known “Zen Style” and then analyzed its thinking model. In addition, we also compared Zen Style and Minimalism that is very similar to the former so as to give a complete skeleton of design theory. On the basis of literature exploring, we studied the influences of Zen on daily object product design. There are two influences: First, inside-out influence: daily object product design (outside) under the influence of Zen (inside). Second, outside-inside influence: styles represented by interior design and related designing fields (outside). Such styles result from the calm mind and can make us understand the mind and see the disposition. The final part of this paper is about design practice. By taking some works (including flavor stick, seal, sponge for cleaning and side table in the sitting room) as examples, we had an in-depth experience and exploration of influences of Zen on product design. We came to the following conclusions:
1. Daily object product design under the influence of Zen aims at making users be aware of unconscious perceptions and obtain new ideas. It focuses on the spiritual dimension.
2. Users will obtain an insight, which is caused by perceptions conveyed by designers that are ignored by people in normal times.
3. In product designs under the influence of Zen, we can see a lot of metaphor and analogy. Similarly, in Kon-An that Buddhist monk preached to disciples, Buddhist monk also used a lot of metaphor so as to prevent disciples from falling into logic of language. Metaphor and insight complement each other.
4. The appearance of daily object products designed under the influence of Zen is characterized by taking archetype as the fundamental tune, corresponding with the content of unconscious in psychology. The concept of archetype appeared in collective unconscious and long-term memory that were proposed by Carl Gustav Jung.
5. Zen style aims at making us calm and understand the mind and see the disposition. It developed “nature’s image simulation”, “calmness of plain color and natural materials” and “multiplicity”, “conformity” and “modularity under rules extension” under “the review of functions”, among which geometric characteristics of “multiplicity” and “modularity” are very similar to styles of minimalism.
