In Korea’s history, before Lee dynasty, many people advocated studying Chinese culture so that a large number of Chinese literatures had been perserved. Although 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》’s original draft has not been found, the related versions are numerous. The thesis aims at different versions of the novel. Moreover, owing to various interpretations of 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》’s author among scholars, this thesis also takes the author into consideration. Except for reviewing the evaluation of 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》 by later generations, the thesis also focuses on the researches by the contemporaries, and then integrates both of them. The thesis studies Chinese traditional thinking in 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》. Compare to other Chinese classic novels, the book put much emphasis on Chinese traditional concepts of Confucianism and Taoism. Although the concepts of Buddhism are mentioned, many of the concepts have been identified and absorbed by Taoism, so only few examples can be given. To avoid the abstract word “thought”, the thesis uses “concept” instead. In addition to the concepts of Confucianism And Taoism, women’s etiquette has been found in 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》. The women’s etiquette is venerated by Confucianists, but real Confucianism does not confabulate about women’s etiquette. In this way another chapter about this notion is made to separate from Confucianism. The thesis is discussed by assorted researches. First of all, roughly assorted author researches have been discussed. Secondly, version research and work research have been approved, and then work research continues. Chinese traditional concepts are centered on as divided chapters are made with more details. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter I is the foreword. It introduces the motivation and ambition in the past researches. The purpose is to understand about the life, character, friendship and writings of the author and to examine 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》’s writing period and writing purpose. Then the differences of versions and existence are observed. The former people’s researches are also included. Chapter II is about the concepts of Confucianism in 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》. Firstly, the origins of China’s Confucianism and the delivery to Korea are investigated. Following on researches in the concepts of Confucianism in 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》, six parts are made as “To advocate about courtesy”, “To put benevolence into practice”, “To enforce the importance of being dutiful”, “To guard for fidelity”, “To keep on loyalty and forbearance”, and “To make claim about politics”. Based on Confucianism, other parts describe the scenes in the story, especially about the constraints of the women including “Requests of etiquette”, “Choices of marriage” and “Status of women”. Chapter Ⅲ is about the concepts of Taoism in 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》. First of all the origins of China’s Taoism and the delivery to Korea are discussed. Following on researches in the concepts of Taoism in 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》. This chapter is divided into four parts as “The sense of quietism and spiritualism”, “The sense of Karma”, “The sense of repayment” and “The sense of ascension”. Moreover, the skills in Taoism are made into four parts as follows: “Astrology”, “Divination by interpreting dreams”, “Invokes” and “Pills of immortality”. Chapter Ⅳ is conclusion. By synthesize the above-mentioned analysis, it proves that the author of 《Yuk Mi Dang Gi》 indeed understand that Chinese traditional Confucianism and Taoism’s scenes should be anticipated. Chinese traditional Confucianism and Taoism’s scenes of this novel are examined. The context within this work is accordant or against with the Age also need to be probed.
