碩士 === 東吳大學 === 資訊科學系 === 95 === 　　In this thesis, we propose a progressive image transmission scheme based on quadtree decomposition and vector quantization. In our proposed method, quadtree decomposition is used to separate area of simple texture and area of complicated texture. We use less storage space for simple area and more storage space for complicated area, and the area of complicated texture can be transmitted with high priority. In our proposed method, the number of stages can be specified by users and the image resolution can be controlled at each stage. The compressed data of each stage is generated according to the user specified resolution. Each stage can refer the last stage such that the computational and transmission rate can be reduced. At the last stage, we applied the relative addressing technique to further improve the image quality. 　　According to the experimental results, to compare with previous method, our proposed method achieves lower transmission bit rate and better image quality during the early stages. In the decoding phase, our proposed method is very simple and require little computational cost. It is quite suitable for mobile device multimedia application.
