Description
Summary:碩士 === 東海大學 === 工業設計學系 === 95 === It is said that in the twenty first century will be an era known as a knowledge economy, where the intellectual capital and creativity have become the main factors of production. This knowledge-driven economy leads us into a business in which the generation and exploitation of knowledge play the predominant part in the creation of wealth. In the past few years, Taiwanese Information Technology Firms have achieved remarkable success in the world’s leading design awards, such as the IF product design award in Germany. Besides the talented young designers, the managers too play an important role in guiding through the whole project. It is therefore vital to establish the level of experience and ability a successful design manager brings to the industrial design process. At present, there are numerous studies destined at analyzing the role of industrial designers. However, there are very few studies concerning the importance and influence of industrial design managers. Therefore, this research will focus on the design managers’ involvement in the industrial design process. This study entails 2 main objectives. Firstly, it aims at pointing out the key capabilities a design manager should possess in executing design projects. Secondly, it tries to list background requirements a successful manager will need in the industrial design process. This study is separated into 3 parts. Firstly, by evaluating case study evidence, a general insight into the design management and the design process will be obtained. Furthermore, it helps to establish an initial structure of this research. Secondly, in order to fulfill the insufficiencies of these case studies, individual interviews have been conducted. According to the knowledge from both the case studies and interview, it induces a basic framework of the study. Finally, for proving the assumption of the research, it adopts an actual example of an incumbent industrial deign manager. The results of this research are as follows: 1.Key competencies which every design manager should have in each stage of ID (Industrial design) project development are as follows: (1) Stage of initiating ID project ─ design transformation ability. (2) Stage of planning ID project ─ design assignment ability and design planning ability. (3) Stage of executive ID project ─ design directing ability and design judgment ability. (4) Stage of controlling ID project─design controlling ability. (5) Stage of closing industrial design project ─ design review ability. 2.Via questionnaires study and depth interview, people with design background, design work experience, and understanding design project process are more qualified to adequate design manager jobs.
